Review: (Age of Assassins #1) The Wounded Kingdom by R.J.Barker

This series came recommended by a friend and I dived into it with a heightened sense of anticipation. Unlike many fantasy beginnings, which start far off or low down, this story begins with a mystery that soon unfolds a world around the reader and the characters: indeed, there are times when it reminded me of The Name of the Rose by Umberto Ecco, in structure if nothing else. Whilst magic is there, it is feared and hunted down, giving the story more of a Game of Thrones meets Assassins Creed flavour, a taste I found to my liking as the first book was digested. Characters are colourful, well developed, and enough politics, suspicions, and betrayals are mixed in to create a powerful feast even amongst the armour, blades, and draughty castles. I look forwards to seeing where the second book takes this tale and its cast in terms of world-building.

Recommended.
