Review: The Elder Race by Adrian Tchaikovsky

One of my favourite authors, with The Cage of Souls being one of my favourite novels of all time.

The Elder Race was … okay.

A short novel, it almost read like a YA work. A bit of developed backstory, the obligatory trek, a final confrontation, but nothing really substantial. It read more like an idea for something that could have been the seed for something better, deeper, richer, longer. After finishing it, I almost wondered why he’d bothered. Don’t get me wrong: the pace, style, and characterisations were all up to his usual high standard but … why?
